DMK legislators urged the State government in the Assembly on Monday to take steps to replace overhead power transmission lines with underground ones in crowded places and urban areas.

DMK MLA N. Karthik (Singanallur) recalled a government order issued during the erstwhile DMK regime for replacing overhead lines in Coimbatore city, and urged the State government to take it up in other areas.

Rising demand

Velachery MLA Vagai Chanderasekar (DMK) also raised the issue. He wanted the State government to set up a sub-station in his constituency in view of the rising demand for electricity in the area.

Responding to the demands, Electricity Minister P. Thangamani said the State government was taking steps to convert overhead lines into underground ones in the limits of various Corporations in the State, and the work was under way in Erode at present.

As for the Velachery MLA’s demand for a sub-station in his area, Mr. Thangamani said that if land was available for the purpose in Velachery, a sub-station would be set up after holding due consultations.

During the past two years, a total of 120 sub-stations had been set up across the State, the Minister added.
