Condemning poor civic conditions, cadres of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) staged a demonstration against Tuticorin Corporation authorities here on Tuesday.
N. Periyasami, district secretary, who led the agitation, said the Corporation was “inactive with no progress in developments for the welfare of people.”
He said road stretches in most parts were in poor condition and authorities ignored them. It caused hardship to residents, he said.
Moreover, public hygiene was at a peril since drainages at several residential localities remained choked causing stench, Mr. Periyasami said, adding that people could get drinking water only once in 10 days. Such delays were caused by poor maintenance of pumping stations, he alleged. He alleged there were irregularities in laying the fourth drinking water pipeline scheme. The pipes had not been laid as per standard specifications and the quality of pipes and other materials was inferior, he said.
P. Geetha Jeevan, former Minister, Anantha Sekaran, town secretary, and several councillors took part.
