Condemning the brutal attack on Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillors by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) councillors during the council meeting on Wednesday, over 1,500 DMK cadre staged a demonstration near the Collectorate here on Friday.

Organised by the Central District Unit of the DMK, its unit in-charge R. Rajendran, former MP T.M. Selvaganapathy, former district secretary in-charge S.R. Sivalingam, former MLA Veerapandi A. Raja and other functionaries took part.

They strongly condemned the attack on V. Deivalingam of Ward 10 who wanted the house to discuss people’s problem. They said that the behaviour of AIADMK councillors, including women councillors, were undemocratic and demanded action against them.

“Poor administration and prevailing corruption practices have tarnished the name of the Corporation as no development works were undertaken,” they said and added that the DMK councillors were not allowed to raise people’s problems.

They said that when DMK councillors were attacked brutally outside the Council hall, the police were mere spectators.

“Stringent action should be taken against them,” they demanded. False case was registered against Mr. Deivalingam who was attacked by other councillors. The case should be withdrawn and the attackers arrested, they said.

The police had registered case against both the AIADMK and DMK councillors over the incident.

However, no arrests were made yet.

Mr. Deivalingam and four AIADMK councillors were undergoing treatment at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital for the past two days.
