Discharge of effluents flayed

June 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - Tirupur:

Coloured industrial effluents found in the open at many places in Tirupur knitwear cluster over the last few days, after overflowing from the drains in the overnight rain, created panic among the people. Though many hundreds of dyeing units and effluent treatment plants were caught for discharging effluents into the open in the last four years, the continuing pollution is causing concern among the farmers.

Untreated effluents could be seen along the drains that lead to River Noyyal during rains.

“The discharges are happening only because that the authorities are not strict in enforcing ‘zero liquid discharge’ norms in Tirupur cluster. The officials should initiate steps to prosecute the violators,” said K. C. M. Balasubramaniam, a farmer and a retired agriculture economist.
