Collector M. Karunakaran inaugurated the Deepavali special discount sale of Khadi and Village Industries products here on Friday in view of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Physical Director of St. Ignatius College of Education, Palayamkottai, Prof. Gladys Stella received the first sale from the Collector.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Karunakaran, after paying floral tributes to the portrait of Gandhiji, said the Deepavali special discount sale of khadi dhotis, towels, bed-sheets, pillows, pillow covers, mattresses, silk saris etc. has commenced on the birth anniversary of Gandhiji. While 30 per cent discount was being given to silk saris and other khadi products, woollen products would carry a 20 per cent discount.
Loan facility was being extended to government officials, Corporation, municipality, town panchayat, panchayat union and village panchayat workers, who would have to repay it in 10 instalments.
“Since the KVI has been given a sales target of Rs. 80 lakh for this fiscal, the public should support it by purchasing its products,” Dr. Karunakaran said. He also inaugurated the sale of idols at Khadi Gramodhyogh Bhavan at Samathanapuram in Palayamkottai.
District Revenue Officer M.G. Kulandaivel was present.
In neighbouring Tuticorin, District Revenue Officer S. Murugaiah inaugurated the discount sale. Speaking on the occasion, the DRO said the KVI showrooms at Tuticorin, Kovilpatti and Tiruchendur, which sold products worth Rs. 42.67 lakh during 2014 – 2015, had been given a target of selling Rs. 60 lakh-worth products including soaps, detergents, incense sticks etc. apart from other products, during the current financial year.
Nagercoil
Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan inaugurated the discount sale of khadhi products at Khadhi showroom near Anna bus stand in Nagercoil on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that the government had fixed the target of selling khadhi products worth Rs.90 lakh for Deepavali season. A target of Rs. 1.5 crore has been fixed for the current financial year.
He appealed to the people, including government employees, employees of private institutions and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, to purchase khadhi products.
There are six well-furnished showrooms at Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Karungal, Arumanai, Colachel and Marthandam in the district.
Apart from these, there are temporary stalls in Marthandam, Monday market, Colachel, Kanyakumari, Ranithottam, Padanthalumoodu, Marthandam and Thiruvattar TNSTC depots. Moreover, it has been decided to set up stalls in Rajakkamangalam, Thuckalay, Kurunthencode, Munchirai, Killiyur, Thiruvattar, Melpuram, Thovalai and Agasteeswaram panchayat unions to boost the sale of khadi products.
