Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit at Chennai airport seized gold jewellery weighing 273 grams, valued at Rs.5.56 lakh from a passenger last week.
An official release said the Customs authorities on suspicion intercepted Farook Kalanthar Saddiq, an Indian passport holder, when he arrived from Singapore.
When the authorities interrogated him, he confessed that he had concealed gold jewellery in the rectum.
The authorities also seized 60 grams of jewellery from his trousers.
The passenger was arrested on charges of non-declaration of jewellery and was remanded to custody.
In another case the authorities seized red sanders logs weighing 56 kg, which were sent to an address in Bangkok. The release said following suspicion, the authorities examined nine parcels sent by a resident of Palavakkam to an address in Bangkok. It revealed that the parcels contained red sanders logs. The authorities seized the pieces and further investigation is on.
During April the Customs authorities detected six cases of ornamental fish smuggling.
The fishes were brought from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. The seized live ornamental fishes were valued at Rs.1.75 lakh.
The authorities had also seized electronic goods worth Rs.2.16 lakh, which arrived through mishandled baggage. Those who booked them have not come to clear it, the release added.
