The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticised the district administration and the police for the poor traffic arrangements during the summer festival, especially during the arrival of VIPs.

In a press release here, the Nilgiris district secretary of the CPI(M), R. Badhri, said that lakh of tourists arrive in the Nilgiris during the summer festival each year, especially during the Ooty Flower Show.

“Traffic came to a standstill in many places and many tourists headed home without seeing any of the major tourist attractions,” said Mr. Badhri.

The arrival of Chief Minister and Governor during the summer festival had led to even more traffic snarls all over the town.

“Even ambulances were blocked at certain places,” he added.

The party called for better traffic planning to ensure that local residents and tourists were not affected by such visits.

On Tuesday, the CPI(M) condemned the authorities who denied permission for the press corps to attend a school function being attended by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The party said that it was undemocratic.
