Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali on Tuesday appealed to Indians to “bear in mind that India is a secular State and not a theocracy” and that “communalism is a malignant disease that is upon us.”

In a statement, Mr. Ali said India’s diversity is its strength and urged citizens of India to safeguard peace, harmony, tolerance and secularism and defend the Constitution and democratic values at all times.

“Communalism distracts attention from efforts to meet the basic needs of the people. It also brings death, destruction and horror in an expanding way, as we are witnessing in some States,” he said.
