Villagers stage a protest at Naickenpatti in Salem on Monday demanding that the Tasmac shop be closed.

Stating that the Tasmac shop in Naickenpatti is functioning in violation of the Supreme Court’s order, villagers demanded that the shop be closed immediately.

Over 1,000 families are residing in the area in Siddhar Kovil Road. On Monday, over 100 people picketed the shop and said that the shop is located within 500 m from the highway. They demanded closure of the shop. They said that petitions were already submitted to the district administration demanding closure. However, no action has been taken so far, they said. Protesters said that more customers throng the shop as other shops were recently closed from Steel Plant to Tharamangalam. They said that women and students were troubled by the customers who sometimes threw stones at the houses. They demanded that the shop be closed immediately.

Senior police officials held talks with them. They promised that the shop will be closed within 15 days after which the protesters left.
