The District Crime Branch (DCB), Vellore, on Friday registered cases against Eravanan, a relative of Sasikala, on the charges of cheating a government building contractor of Rs.1 crore on the false promise of obtaining a contract for quarrying sand on the Palar riverbed.

According to DCB sources, the contractor, G.G. Ravi, is also the chairman of a self-financing engineering college near here, and was expelled from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for anti-party activities last year.

He has stated in his complaint that Arumugam, an associate of Eravanan, took him to Chennai and introduced him to Eravanan last year.

Mr. Ravi paid Rs.1 crore to Eravanan at a hotel here in December last year.

Later, the complainant alleged, Eravanan issued threats asking him to pay another Rs.2 crore for obtaining the contract.

Since he felt cheated, the contractor lodged a complaint with the DCB.

Cases have been booked against Eravanan and Arumugam under sections 420 (cheating) and 506(2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
