Planting of trees and distribution of diploma certificates to outgoing nursing students marked the International Nurses Day celebrations here on Tuesday.

Addressing the function organised for distribution of certificates to the nursing students at Dindigul Government Hospital, Nursing College Principal Chitra said that the duration of nursing course had been reduced to three years from three and a half years from this academic year.

The Dindigul Government Nursing College alone produced 600 nurses since 2004.

All the nursing colleges in the State had so far produced 8,000 nurses. A total of 7,200 vacancies of nursing posts in government hospitals were being filled, she added.

Joint Director of Health Services M. Ravikala gave away diploma certificates to 50 nursing students.

Earlier, the Dindigul GH celebrated the International Nurses Day. Tamil Nadu Government Nurses Association secretary Jothi, district president Thilakavathi and doctors planted tree saplings, including Nilavembu saplings, on the hospital campus.
