Cauvery water let into tank inundates school

It is the second time such incident is happening

June 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - VANIYAMBADI:

Cauvery water let into the tank of the Vaniyambadi Municipality constructed under the Combined Water Supply Scheme inside the Municipal High School in Gandhinagar in New Town overflowed and entered the playground of the school, inundating the ground just before lunch hour on Thursday.

As a result of this, students could not come out of their classrooms. The school authorities declared a holiday in the afternoon on account of the situation.

Since the gate valve for the pipeline is located in Veppambattu, more than 10km from the school, it took about two hours for the employees to reach there and close the valve. This is the second time such an incident happened in the school. On the previous occasion, it happened during the school holidays. The school authorities have been urging the municipality to construct a compound wall for the school encompassing the school portion in such a way that the water tank is outside the compound wall, as a permanent solution to the problem. But the municipality has been saying that the company which laid the pipelines has to undertake the work, whereas the company is reported to have refused to do the work.

A solution thus remains elusive.
