“BJP expects good governance from AIADMK, at least now”

May 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - NAGERCOIL:

The AIADMK government had remained dysfunctional for the last six months and the Bharatiya Janata Party expected good governance, at least now, after the acquittal of its leader Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case, State president Tamizhisai Soundarrajan said here on Tuesday.

Ms. Tamizhisai inaugurated the Chithirai Pongala Vizha at the Chamundeeswari Amman Temple in Poovaga Parambu village in Kumarapuram panchayat near Thuckalay.

Addressing reporters on the sidelines of the temple festival, Ms. Tamizhisai said that there were many assumptions about the BJP after the verdict in the case. The party never encouraged corruption or interfered in court proceedings and it would be appropriate for Ms. Jayalalithaa to get a clean chit from the highest court in the country, she said.

“My greeting of Ms. Jayalalithaa for her acquittal in the DA case had been mistaken by the media,” Ms. Tamizhisai said.

She said that the people expected peace at least now and insisted that PWD contracts should be awarded only through e-tendering system as done in Gujarat, so that it would eliminate corruption and encourage transparent governance.

The BJP wanted to become an alternative for the two Dravidian parties in the State. Keeping this in view, 40 lakh people had so far been enrolled as members. When asked about a possible alliance with the AIADMK in the Assembly election, she said that it was premature to decide on alliances now. The final decision on alliances would be taken by the party high command.

Ms. Tamizhisai said that only the NDA government led by BJP would find a long-lasting solution to the fishermen problem. The party would not allow implementation of the recommendations of the Meena Kumari report on allowing foreign vessels for deep-sea fishing.
