The Thirukkurunkudi police have registered an attempt-to-murder case against seven persons, including a ruling AIADMK functionary, who allegedly attacked a forest guard on Tuesday evening.

Police said A. Subramanian (57), a forest guard from Vadukatchimathil near Kalakkad in the district was on duty at the Nambi Kovil check-post at Thirukkurunkudi on Tuesday evening to issue passes to devotees and vehicles going to the place of worship.

When a group from a few hamlets around Nanguneri was asked by Mr. Subramanian to get passes by registering their car number in the Forest department records, it did not stop the car and went straight to the temple.

When the group members returned around 6 p.m., Mr. Subramanian stopped the car at the check-post and asked one of the occupants to put his signature in the records and get the pass.

Opposing it, they picked up argument with Mr. Subramanian and thrashed him. They also broke the ‘pass vending machine’ and the furniture at the check-post. The guard was rushed to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for a fractured leg.

Based on a complaint from Mr. Subramanian, the Thirukkurunkudi police registered a case against AIADMK functionary and Nanguneri Cooperative Society president Paramasivan, Pushpa Pandi and Pon Esakki of Nambithalaivanpattaiyam and Ramaiah, Nainar, Udaiyar and Manikandan, all from Marukaalkurichi, under Section 307 of Indian Penal Code (attempt to murder).

A hunt is on to nab Paramasivan and others.
