Approach road needed

January 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:10 am IST

The need for an approach road between Crawford and Mannarpuram is long-felt as the residents of Ramachandra Nagar, Edamalaipattipudur, and Crawford have to travel 5 km to reach Mannarpuram. Because of the 200-acre Defence land lying in between these residential localities, the residents have to take a circuitous route. Moreover, the bridge work at Tiruchi junction adds to the problems. In course of time if a residential colony crops up at VOC Nagar near here, a connecting road up to Joseph’s Colony would be useful.

Eco friendly city

Prevention and subsequent ban of plastic material during celebration of Srirangam Vaikunta Ekadasi is a welcome step. This plan can be implemented in rest of the temples in the city where public gathering is large. The authorities concerned should monitor that the thickness of plastic material of 40 microns is being maintained so that everybody enjoys an eco-friendly environment.

Convert park

into office

The renovated park in Mahalakshmi Nagar lacks play equipment for children and is not being used by many. This space may be utilised for building a government office.

Stray cattle

The stray cattle roaming the streets in Simco Meter and LIC Colony areas causes a big nuisance to road users and a threat to two-wheeler riders. Moreover, there are no lights on one side of the road. It is scary to use the road near Periyar School because of insufficient lighting. The authorities concerned should put an end to cattle menace and install sufficient streetlights.

Bad road

The condition of the Rockins Road located between Central Bus Stand and junction Rountana and newly laid road between Dinathanthi office and Railway junction has deteriorated in the recent rains. The buses have started plying on the old road. The road is not in a motorable condition. The authorities must provide the residents with basic amenities.

Freebies for all

Freebies for Pongal such as dhotis and saris are distributed only to a section of cardholders at the fair price shops. All card holders need to be treated equally and not denied the benefits enjoyed by some.

Underground power cables

In cities such as Chennai, all the power cables are laid underground so that the road space is utilised fully. This can be adopted in Tiruchi, which is struggling to accommodate the ever burgeoning traffic. Overhead cables impede road-widening projects as well. Underground cables provide space and beauty to the city.

Print IFSCI code

Most bank functions need IFSCI code and for availing LPG subsidy. But many banks do not print the IFSCI code in the passbook. It is necessary to print the respective branch’s IFSCI code in the passbooks.

Strengthening of water channel

The news items regarding the strengthening of the “Srirangam Nattu Vaikal” (January 4, 2015) was pleasing.

The canal which runs 22km from Melur to Kondaiyampettai has been strengthened with assistance from NABARD at an estimated cost of Rs. 38 crore. The interesting aspect of the scheme is the entire stretch has been converted into a concrete structure, with bathing ghats being located along its course, as the canal passes through a number of habitations.

Joint account and gas agency

It is insisted that a bank account number is to be furnished to gas agency for crediting subsidy amount on supply of cylinders. When a joint account number of husband and wife is furnished, they refuse saying that the name of the cylinder holder is not the first name. While the second named depositor is granted equal rights as of first named, denial to accept this by gas agency is unjust. The District Collector is requested to intervene and direct the gas agency suitably.

Concrete road

Recently, a family had a providential escape when their two-wheeler skidded in the middle of the road at Thillai Nagar. Zig-zag driving by two-wheeler riders is perilous. This road should be converted into a cement road at once.

Restaurant at airport

It is nice to hear that they plan to start a restaurant at the Tiruchi Airport for the passengers. Hope the prices are reasonable unlike other airports and should cater for people.

Auto fare control

It appears no official machinery can control auto fares in Tamil Nadu in spite of many efforts undertaken by courts and officials.

The public are made to look like fools if they believe news reports regarding fixing of minimum fare, night fare, km rating, and so on. It was anticipated that there would be a change after High Court’s intervention. But the reality is that nothing can change the auto drivers of this State.

Widen bridge

The new Femina Hyper Mall on Old Good shed Road has now started functioning. As a result, the bridge near Fort Station is facing traffic bottleneck and the road between Main Guard Gate to Thillai Nagar (up to Sastri Road) is getting choked frequently. The widening of the bridge will give some relief to commuters.

Install lights

The newly built bridge across Kudamurutti river along Vayalur Road lacks lighting facility. As a result, the vehicle users find it difficult, especially at night while crossing the bridge. A prominent and suitable warning board with fluorescent sticker about the dangerous curve on the southern side of the bridge may be of great help for the vehicle riders when they cross the bridge after sunset. Request the authorities concerned to provide lights over the bridge and a suitable warning board.

Regulate traffic

Crossing the road in Kattur near city bus stop is a nightmare. All vehicles proceeding at a reckless speed pose a threat to public. No traffic constables, speed-breakers, and signals are to be seen here. Accidents are a common affair here. Speed-breakers may be laid to prevent accidents while crossing the road. Immediate steps should be taken to regulate traffic.

Keep the market clean

The Uzhavar Sandhai at Anna Nagar is not being maintained properly by the corporation. Parts of the market resemble a dump yard. Parking of vehicles inside the Uzhavar Sandhai must be avoided to allow free movement of customers. The authorities should maintain the place clean by deploying corporation workers.

Lift ban on Jallikattu

Jallikattu has been an important sport of Tamil society for ages. Taking cognisance of the complaints by animal activists, the Supreme Court has banned this sport.

Bull farmers spend thousands of rupees on feeding the bulls. Taking the historical, economical and cultural contexts into consideration, the Supreme Court must lift the ban on Jalikattu. Many a time there is violence during some of the world famous sporting events.

If these events are allowed to continue why choose only jallikattu to be banned?

Ripening fruits

Ripening of bananas using calcium carbide, which has carcinogenic properties and is used in gas welding for steel goods, is creating havoc. Those who consume the fruits end up with mouth ulcers, gastric irritation, or even food poisoning. Awareness camps ought to be conducted to educate banana growers, traders about safe methods of ripening in contrast to use of chemicals. The Horticulture Department should do the needful, keeping in focus the gravity of the problem.

Buck up BSNL

The service of BSNL has become far from satisfactory. In spite of many written requests for alerts regarding monthly bill details, nothing has materialised.

Attending to problems of internet connectivity has become poor.
