The State Forest Department has proposed to set up an anti-poaching watchtower near Mettur on the Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border with the twin objectives of watching the activities of the anti-social elements involved in poaching and protecting the wildlife.
Cost
The watchtower will come up at a cost of Rs. 7.2 lakh and a site has been identified near Karaikadu village near Govindapadi near Mettur.
Besides, the watchtower, the project also involved construction of a shed for the benefit of the forest personnel.
Poachers
The project was in the wake of presence of wild elephants and deer in the reserve forests abutting villages such as Thanda, Palaru Vazhaiyankombai and the threat the wildlife faced from the poachers. The watch tower and the presence of forest personnel will help in checking the activities of anti-social elements and in protecting the wildlife, Nagarajan, District Forest Officer, who visited the Chennampatti forest range on Sunday to inspect the site identified for the execution of the project, told presspersons.
