Alagappa University has hurriedly reversed its decision to remove ‘ Neethi Devan Mayakkam ’ (Judge’s dilemma), the famous play of late Chief Minister C N Annadurai, from the syllabus for MA (Tamil), following opposition from different quarters, including the DMK.

After a circular issued by the university’s Tamil Department on November 9 directing the principals of the constituent colleges to replace the play with Aru Ramanathan’s ‘Raja Raja Chozhan’ for the fourth semester in part I Tamil was circulated on social media, DMK town secretary Durai Anand condemned the university and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the circular.

In a letter to the complaint cell on Sunday, he requested Collector J. Jayakanthan to prevail upon the university to withdraw its decision. When contacted, Prof N Rajendran, Vice Chancellor of the university, said the Dean of Tamil department had issued the circular without consulting him, and he had directed him to withdraw it.

He said that when the chairman of the board of studies makes any recommendation for changing the syllabus, the department concerned would consult him, after which the recommendation would be placed before the academic council for approval and the syndicate for ratification. But in this case, the procedure was not followed. The Dean has been asked to give an explanation.
