Alertness, attentiveness and dedication in duty are essential for gatekeepers and other field staff at manned level crossings to ensure cent per cent safety to train passengers and check accidents, said Senior Divisional Engineer K.G. Gnanasekaran.

Addressing an engineering safety seminar organised by the Engineering Division of Southern Railway at Dindigul Railway Station here on Friday, he said gatekeepers should follow the rules and guidelines strictly.

Team work from bottom to top was a must to ensure safety. Role of gatekeepers was vital when compared to other staff in the engineering division. Rules and guidelines were very simple and easy to follow, he added.

Safety counsellor D. Kadiravan said lack of awareness and slackness in following rules were the major weakness among gatekeepers. Dedicated work and willingness to learn will help them excel.

Senior Section Engineer C.K. Ethirarajulu stated that overqualified persons joined the duty. They were very strong in theory, but were lacking in application. Following rules alone suffice to ensure cent per cent safety, he added.

The gatekeepers also appealed to conduct similar seminars at least once in three months or six months to help them update their knowledge and get latest information.
