DMK treasurer M. K. Stalin lashed out at the State government, led by the AIADMK, for what he described as its poor performance in office.
Addressing a public meeting at R.M.Colony on Thursday, Mr. Stalin accused the government of stopping the development works initiated during the DMK’s rule.
The meeting was organised to raise election funds and to celebrate the 90th birthday of party chief and former Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi.
Mr. Stalin said the “highlight” of AIADMK rule was the collapse of law and order and the stalling of the Sethu Samudram Project, which he described as the 150-year-old dream of the people of Tamil Nadu.
In the AIADMK’s 2004 Lok Sabha election manifesto, Jayalalithaa had stated that her party would try to implement the Sethu project, which was supported by former Chief Ministers C.N.Annadurai and M.G.Ramachandran. Now she had filed a case in the Supreme Court against the project, he said.
Ms.Jayalalithaa has left the new secretariat building in disuse only because it was constructed during the DMK regime. The Anna Library building was saved from neglect thanks to the intervention of court, he pointed out.
She also tried to discontinue Samacheer Kalvi (Uniform Education System), which was saved by the intervention of the Supreme Court. The increase in pass percentage in the SSLC examinations this year proved the success of Samacheer Kalvi, he said. Mr.Stalin said the government did nothing to boost power generation. Opposition members were not allowed to discuss the issue in the Assembly, he contended. The State Crime Bureau report showed that the crime rate had increased by two per cent in the State, he noted.
