Aam Aadmi Party has lent support to activist Sasi Perumal, who has been fasting for over a month seeking total prohibition.
The representatives of the party were at the venue of the fast near Valluvar Kottam on Friday.
The party's state campaign committee convenor David Barun Kumar said the party had offered support as the State government had not made any effort to meet Mr. Sasi Perumal though he had been fasting for the last 36 days.
The AAP also condemned the state's action of forcing him to shift his venue every two days.
Mr. Barun Kumar said the party had taken a stand that the decision to set up liquor shops should be left to gram sabhas or ward sabhas.
The state government must gradually phase out liquor shops and shut down all bars immediately, the party has said.
Speaking to press persons later, he said that the party would announce candidates for the general elections in the next eight to nine days.
The criteria for a candidate included those whose ideologies matched "the party's policies". At present the party is looking to field over 15 candidates in the state.
According to Mr. Barun Kumar there are currently over three lakh members in AAP in Tamil Nadu.
