Students from the IFET College of Engineering, Villupuram, put their technical skill to use by designing a device to make boarding a bus easier for commuters, especially the elderly and children. Having seen that the height of most bus footboards makes it difficult for commuters to use them, the students have designed a step which can be fixed below the footboard, said a press release from the college. Once the bus door opens, this step is projected at a lower elevation and locked in place. Once the door closes, the step is withdrawn inside. The device is operated by a shaft and gear mechanism and requires no power source, said the release. The project has received an award at the conference organised by the International Association of Engineering & Technology for Skill Development at Chennai, said the release. The project also received an award at an expo organised at Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, it said. The students behind the project, D. Sujith, S. Premkumar and K. Suryavarman were appreciated by the college management.

In further good news for the college, a pair of students, K. Chokkalingam and M. Gayathri have walked away with several awards in the quiz competitions conducted by CUBANE (St. Xaviers College, Palayamkottai) and the All India Quiz Club located in IIT-Madras campus. They beat teams from IIT-Madras, IIT-Delhi and IIT-Guwahati at the competitions held in St. Xaviers College, Palayamkottai, said a release from the college.

College excels in placement drive

The Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College, Puducherry, did well in the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) campus placement drive with more than 50 per cent students being selected, said a press release from the college.

The TCS campus placement drive included two rounds, consisting of an aptitude test and an HR interview.

A total of 326 students were selected. The college will also be organising recruitment drives with other leading IT firms and companies, said the release. The selected candidates were felicitated by the college management.
