More than 3,000 police personnel, including those drawn from Central paramilitary forces, will be deployed in the four regions of the Union Territory to ensure smooth conduct of polls on Wednesday.
Inspector General of Police J.K. Sharma on Tuesday briefed officers below the rank of Superintendent of Police, Inspectors and Assistant Sub-Inspectors on security arrangements. He also held a separate meeting with SPs to brief them about the force deployment.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Atul Katiyar told TheHindu that all precautionary measures had been taken to prevent any untoward incidents. “Voters can go to the polling booths and cast their votes without any fear. Additional security has been provided in all the sensitive booths.”
Apart from the 2,111 personnel belonging to the territorial police, including 113 women police constables, as many as 391 men from the India Reserve Battalion and 588 members from the Central Industrial Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force will be on poll duty.
Additional security will be provided at the 69 sensitive booths in Puducherry, 19 in Karaikal and 10 each in Mahe and Yanam, he said, adding anti-sabotage check teams had been formed to assist police officers and staff on poll duty to identify suspicious objects.
A central control room for Assembly elections has started functioning and will remain operational till further orders, he said.
