DINDIGUL: One person surrendered before Nilakottai Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday in connection with the brutal assault on a senior journalist working for a private television channel in Madurai on Sunday.

The surrendered was V. Karuppusamy (23) of Kannappan Street in Mullai Nagar in Madurai. The prosecution said the accused surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate Court in the forenoon.

On hearing the surrender petition, Judicial Magistrate B. Risana Parveen remanded Karuppusamy in 15 days’ judicial custody, and advised the police to lodge him in Madurai Central Prison. Later, he was taken to the Madurai prison.

An unidentified gang had assaulted R. Chandran (46) of Mahatma Gandhi Nagar in Madurai with lethal weapons when he was returning home from a milk booth on Sunday morning.

The police had arrested one J. Arun Joseph alias Kingsley (24), and were in search of two more persons – Dinesh and Karuppu – who were reportedly involved in the assault.

Mr. Chandran is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Madurai. The injured had earlier complained to the police about ganja users creating nuisance in the locality.
