P. Ramkumar is recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit of Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital after a team of surgeons performed a procedure to arrest bleeding from his throat. The suspect, who had attempted to slit his throat when the police knocked on his door, has been slapped with a charge of attempting suicide and has been arrested though he will continue to remain in the hospital.
Dean of TVMCH K. Sithy Athiya Munavarah said the 23-year-old Ramkumar was stable. “Though he has gained consciousness, he will be able to speak only after 48 hours,” Dr. Sithy said.
The police have decided to wait for two days before interrogating him. “We have no doubts over Ramkumar’s involvement. Hence, we will not do anything that will worsen his health or delay his recuperation,” said a police officer, who is part of the investigation team.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Nungambakkam, Devaraj, and V. Vikraman, Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli, visited Ramkumar in the ICU but did not ask him any questions.
