Students go on rampage over derecognition move

Students of Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Engineering College ie Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science and Technology University (PRIST University) which has been derecognised by the Government went on a rampage here on Wednesday and damaged the security buildings at the entrance of the college.

The students who gathered at the college to discuss about their future suddenly turned violent and pelted stones. Later they tried to organise a rasta roko on Thanjavur-Tiruchi highway.

Police who arrived at the campus chased the students away. Later Ravindran, Revenue Divisional Officer, Maheskumar Kalirat, ASP, held discussions with the management. The college was indefinitely closed after the incident. Students in hostels were given time till afternoon to vacate.

According to the Centre’s move, two Universities in Thanjavur -- PRIST University and Periyar Maniammai University -- will lose the deemed university status.
