All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Monday alleged that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led government in Tamil Nadu had failed on many fronts, particularly in safeguarding the State's rights in the Mullaiperiyar dam water case.

Addressing a huge rally here, Ms. Jayalalithaa alleged that the DMK, which also shared power at the Centre, had not taken any action on the dam issue in order to protect business interests in Kerala.

In her two-hour speech, she faulted the government for power shortage, spiralling prices, sand smuggling and the attack on advocates in the Madras High Court.

A series of death threats was issued against her till Sunday to prevent her from visiting Madurai, she said. But she would not be cowed down.

The capacity crowd on the open ground along the Ring Road on the city's outskirts roared in approval whenever Ms. Jayalalithaa launched a verbal attack on Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Alagiri. She charged that he was running away from Parliament.

Party treasurer O. Pannerselvam said it was not just a protest demonstration, but a declaration of war against the “anti-people” rule of the DMK.
