There is no truth in Karnataka Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai's charge that Tamil Nadu has been violating the agreement reached between the States on utilising the Cauvery water for the Hogenakkal drinking water project.
During the discussion on demands on Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said there was no basis to the Karnataka Minister's charge that Tamil Nadu would utilise 2.5 tmcft of water for the project. It would draw only 1.4 tmcft of water and had received permission from the Centre. Again, the Karnataka Minister's claim that head-works of the project site was on disputed site was not true; it was well within Tamil Nadu border.
Mr. Stalin said the project was progressing as per schedule and would be completed as per the target.
The Hogenakkal drinking water supply scheme is being implemented by the State with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency for supplying potable water to the people of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.
The project will cover three municipalities, 17 town panchayats, 6755 rural habitations and 18 panchayat unions in the State, according to a policy note presented in the House by the Deputy Chief Minister.
