Seven Bills including the one to extend the validity of the Rosewood Trees (Conservation) Act were introduced in the Assembly on Friday.
It was in February 1995 that the original legislation on rosewood trees came into effect. At that time, it was intended to keep the Act in force only for 15 years. As the trees belonged to the category of rare species, the government decided to extend the validity to another 15 years.
Among other Bills were those pertaining to the enhancement of salaries and vehicle allowance of Members of the Legislative Assembly, extension of the term of office of the Special Officers of cooperative institutions to another six months and the amendment of the Societies Registration Act that stipulated restricting the use or registration of any society by a name containing the term “Human Rights.”
