Second edition of Indian Youth Science Congress from June 26

June 16, 2010 01:07 am | Updated 01:07 am IST - CHENNAI:

The second Indian Youth Science Congress, being organised here from June 26 to 28 will focus on encouraging scientists in the age group of 18 to 35.

At present there was no platform for mid-level scientists to share their experiences while there was forum for senior scientists and for budding scientists.

To fill this vacuum, the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation and the SRM University launched all-India youth science congress last year on the lines of national science congress.

Opportunities

Explaining the salient features of the second edition of the congress here on Tuesday, Ajay Parida, Executive Director of the MSSRF, said the youth science congress would help young professionals in various scientific fields to discuss and share their expertise and experiences.

It would provide opportunities to scientists who were in the early stage of research to mingle with senior scientists, who were expected to share their experiences with young scientists, he added.

Restructured programme

M.S. Swaminathan, chairman of the MSSRF, said the whole programme of the congress had been restructured in such a manner to excite the young scientists.

The meet assumed significance as it was being held in the international year of youth which was to begin soon and the decade of innovation launched by the government of India.

P. Sathyanarayanan, Vice-Chancellor of the SRM University, said efforts were being taken to make youth science congress an annual affair and rules and regulations were being finalised to register an association for it.

Good response

He said the congress had received good response from young scientists.

About 500 delegates from all-over the country were expected to attend the meet.

So far, it had received 300 research papers and invited 40 guest speakers to give special address on various topics.

Register as observers

Students and scholars who were not presenting their work were also encouraged to register as observers to participate in the meet, he added.
