July 25, 2010 12:18 am | Updated 12:18 am IST - CHENNAI:

A new curriculum for MBBS and a common entrance test are on the cards, S.K. Sarin, Chairman, Medical Council of India, has said.

Addressing the inaugural of ‘Digestive Endoscopy Week (DEW) 2010,' the annual conference of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI), Prof. Sarin said a lot of work had gone into framing a new curriculum that would be up on the MCI website shortly. .

He posited the idea of a trickle phenomenon — educating more specialists who will not confine themselves to metros and tier-2 towns. To this end, the MCI is aiming at starting 100 colleges in one year, Prof. Sarin said.

K. Ponmudy, Higher Education Minister, said the need of the hour was to ensure access to specialists even in rural and remote areas. He also called for a more inter-disciplinary approach to treating patients.
