June 19, 2010 01:20 am | Updated 01:20 am IST - CHENNAI:

In the wake of reports that a few persons had died in Tiruchi and Tirunelveli owing to dysentery, Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam on Friday held discussions with senior officials, including the Health Secretary, at the Secretariat.

A release from the government stated that these people had been affected by contaminated water. “There was no sign of cholera.”

Besides urging the local bodies to ensure that people were getting protected drinking water, the government directed TWAD Board officials to repair all the leakages in the pipes.

“All the government hospitals and primary health centres have adequate medicines. Medical teams have been formed to avert any untoward incidents,” the release said.
