June 10, 2010 12:55 am | Updated 12:55 am IST - CUDDALORE:

Pattali Makkal Katchi MLA T.Velmurugan on Wednesday joined the fast-unto-death agitation launched by a section of the contract workers of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation at Neyveli on Wednesday.

The workers owing allegiance to the PMK labour wing, Pattali Thozhir Sangam, had begun the indefinite hunger strike on Monday in support of their nine-point charter of demands.

Their demands include absorption of 5,000 contract labourers in the Industrial Cooperative Service Society (INDCOSERVE) as a prelude to regularisation of their services, wage revision, weekly off day with wages and so on.

The MLA said that even though the NLC management had signed the agreement six months ago it was yet to honour its commitment.

Meanwhile, seven of the workers who reported giddiness and exhaustion from three day's hunger strike were admitted to the NLC general hospital for treatment.
