Karunanidhi's justification amounts to contempt of court: Jayalalithaa

January 29, 2011 12:36 am | Updated November 17, 2021 03:31 am IST - CHENNAI:

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Friday said the statement of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi justifying 2G spectrum allocation on first-come-first-served basis and denying loss to the exchequer would amount to contempt of court.

In a statement here, she said Union Minister Kapil Sibal had already been criticised by the court for expressing similar views on spectrum allocation.

“Mr. Karunanidhi, by his remarks, is not only trying to influence the court, but also trying to hoodwink the people,” she said.

She wanted to know why A. Raja, who then held the portfolio of Communications and Information Technology, decided to change the date for submitting applications at the last minute and rejected the advice of the Prime Minister.

Stumbling blocks

“Mr. Karunanidhi has not answered why the advice of the Law Ministry that the issue should be referred to Empowered Group of Ministers was rejected,” she said.

Accusing Mr. Karunanidhi of creating stumbling blocks for a probe into the affair by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), Ms. Jayalalithaa said her party unit in Pudukottai would hold a demonstration on Saturday to highlight the scam and demand action against Mr. Raja.
