An anonymous telephone call stating 'a bomb will explode at Jayalalithaa's swearing-in ceremony' received at Chennai Central created a flutter. Police sources said the call was received at the railway control room around midnight on Thursday and the caller's voice sounded like it was a man's.
Government Railway Police teams swiftly probed the threat by carrying out searches at the University of Madras, Chepauk campus, where the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on Saturday. Realising the threat to be a hoax, investigators then traced the caller to Nagercoil and found that a man suffering from mental illness was suspected to have made the threat call. He is being questioned further.
Meanwhile the Chepauk campus in the University has turned into a fortress with police personnel cordoning off the area for media persons and the general public. University staff and other authorised persons are only granted access with valid identification cards.
