Tamil Nadu government began an inquiry on Saturday into the alleged police detention of CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat on September 12 when she was on her way to Uthapuram village that witnessed clashes between Dalits and upper caste people last year.

State government’s Principal Secretary, Industries, M F Farooqui questioned 36 police officials, including Madurai rural district SP M Manohar, DSPs, inspectors and constables in connection with the matter and also talked to some CPI(M) activists.

Ms. Karat’s car was stopped by police when she was on her way to Uthapuram and was taken to a police station. She was, however, later escorted by the police to the village.
