The Madras High Court on Monday ordered notice to eight candidates, who contested from the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency, returnable by March 29, on a petition by a person seeking to substitute himself for the CPI (M) nominee who had challenged the election of Union Fertilisers and Chemicals Minister M.K. Alagiri.
CPI (M) candidate Mohan, who had challenged the election of the Minister, died on October 30 last. A. Lazar of Vilangudi moved the court seeking to substitute himself for Mohan.
In his counter, Mr. Alagiri had stated that Mr. Lazar had no locus standi to file the petition. Justice V. Dhanapalan ordered notice to the other candidates and adjourned the matter.
Justice K. Chandru adjourned to March 26 a petition filed by former AIADMK Minister Sathyamurthy challenging the election of J.K. Riteesh of the DMK from Ramanathapuram Lok Sabha constituency.
Mr. Sathyamurthy had joined the DMK recently.
When the petition came up, counsel said she had not received any instruction from Mr. Sathyamurthy.
