A youth, believed to be a fan of actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant was taken into custody by the police after he hurled footwear at actor Vadivelu at a campaign meeting at Thiruvanaikovil in the city on Thursday.

The fan, identified as Masilamani, hurled the footwear towards Mr. Vadivelu's campaign vehicle. However, it did not hit the actor. Mr. Vadivelu was just about to leave the place after canvassing support for N. Anand, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate for Srirangam when the incident took place.

The youth was immediately apprehended by the police and whisked away even as a group of DMK cadre raised slogans urging action against him.

Soon after the incident, a temporary election office of the DMDK located nearby was attacked by some unidentified persons, suspected to be DMK supporters. Some tubelights and a signboard were reported to have been damaged. Police intervened quickly to disperse the mob.

Police said a complaint has been received from the DMDK in connection with the attack on the party office.

Earlier, Mr. Vadivelu continued his tirade against Mr. Vijayakant, alleging that the DMDK leader did not even know the symbols of his alliance partners. He campaigned in Tiruchi East and Tiruchi West constituencies also during the day.
