March 19, 2010 01:59 am | Updated November 17, 2021 05:52 am IST - CHENNAI:

The first phase of elections to the State Youth Congress has been completed with party workers at panchayat, town panchayat, municipal and corporation ward levels electing five members each from their area.

The next phase will be elections to Assembly committees and delegates and 10 committee members and 10 delegates will be elected from each of the 234 Assembly constituencies, said K.J. Rao, in-charge of Youth Congress elections in the country, here on Thursday.

Addressing newspersons, Mr. Rao said the Assembly committee members and delegates in turn would elect committee members and delegates for their respective Lok Sabha constituencies.

Tamil Nadu has been divided into five zones — Chennai, Salem, Coimbatore, Salem and Madurai.

One Lok Sabha constituency in each zone has been reserved for SC and ST candidates.

Representatives from Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies will elect the State level office-bearers, including the State Youth Congress president and delegates for all-India body, he said

By and large the first phase of the elections was peaceful but for a few minor incidents. The election committee suspended 7 persons for malpractices and misbehaviour with returning officers, Mr. Rao added.
