Several political parties and social organisations in the state on Thursday asked the State government to revoke the suspension of IAS officer C. Umashankar.
At a meeting organised by Makkal Sakthi Katchi (Lok Satta Party – TN Chapter), Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary G. Ramakrishnan said the government was increasingly turning anti-Dalit which was evident from the events from Uthapuram to the suspension of Mr. Umashankar.
Communist Party of India (CPI) leader R. Nallakannu said that an honest officer had been suspended for trying to protect government property. Asking what would be the fate of a common man if an IAS officer had to struggle so much, he said it was an indication of the way democracy was heading.
Recalling the J.P. movement of the 1970s, M.G. Devasahayam, a retired IAS officer, cautioned corrupt politicians that people have the ability to dethrone them from power. Terming the suspension as an act of vendetta, P. Sivakami, another retired IAS officer, and other speakers demanded that the government revoke it as Mr. Umashankar had served honestly in public service for the past 20 years.
