Demand for protection of pelicans

Environmentalists as well as residents here on Sunday emphasised then need to protect pelicans and urged the government to take steps to ensure the same.

A large number of pelicans and other birds have begun to land on water bodies at Thathayarkulam, Theroor, Suchindrum, Manakudi and Erachakkulam Environmentalists from different parts of the district have urged the district administration to declare these water boundaries as bird sanctuaries as quite a large number of birds including from some foreign countries land in these water bodies during the three months between October and December for breeding and in search of prey.

However the poachers are increasingly targeting the birds and killing them.

It is in this context that environmentalists, ornithologists and others have appealed the concerned officials to protect these birds from poaching
