Concept of social justice revitalised: Karunanidhi

July 22, 2010 12:38 am | Updated 12:38 am IST - CHENNAI:

It is owing to the relentless legal battles waged by the State government that the concept of social justice has been revitalised and people belonging to the Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes can heave a sigh of relief, Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi said on Wednesday.

Reacting to the Supreme Court's ruling last week on the 69 per cent reservation in education and employment for the BCs/MBCs and SC/STs, he gave a historical background of various struggles on the issue, particularly those in the wake of the Supreme Court judgment in 1992. He said it had been the consistent position of his party that the power to determine the quantum of reservation should be left to States. In this regard, a Constitutional amendment should be enacted.
