CPI (M) warns Tirupur MLA

July 10, 2010 11:16 pm | Updated July 11, 2010 02:36 am IST - Tirupur:

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued strictures to senior functionary and Tirupur MLA, C. Govindasami, following his press statement on Saturday that he will organise a meeting on August 1 to felicitate the DMK government for “all the good work done for Tirupur constituency.”

Mr. Govindasami's absence was also noted at the party's district committee meeting held in the presence of State secretary G. Ramakrishnan.

In a letter issued to Mr. Govindasami, it was stated that the party would have to take stringent action against him if he went ahead with the felicitation function.

“Such function is against the party stand since the CPI (M) has been criticising both Central and State governments for their anti-people policies,” the party's district leader Kamaraj clarified.

May join DMK

Mr. Govindasami's announcement of the public function came close on the heels of rumours that he, along with a few other senior functionaries, will join the DMK shortly.

Reacting to the warning issued by the party, Mr. Govindasami told The Hindu that he would go ahead with the function as scheduled.

“The CPI (M) has always praised the good work done by anybody and hence, there is nothing wrong in conducting a felicitation considering that the State government has fulfilled almost all promises of infrastructure works for the Tirupur constituency,” he said. The expenses for the function will be raised through public contributions, he said.
