Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Tuesday handed over an ambulance to Rajeswari, chief executive, Velicham, a non-governmental organisation, for helping tribal people of Kalrayan Hills in South Arcot District.
According to a release from G. Manilal, district chairperson, extension, of Lions District 324 A8, the tribals in about 40 hamlets were in distress because of poor transport facilities. For any medical emergency, they had to traverse six km from the hills.
Pregnant women were the worst hit.
The fate of those suffering snake-bite was also in jeopardy. To help these people, Lions District 324 A8 donated the ambulance.
The function was presided over by M.R. Sivakumar, governor of the Lions District, in the presence of P.Jyothimani, Judge of the Madras High Court.
Those who took part included vice-governors of the district P. Rajamanickam and R. Pazhamalai, District Secretary R. Rajan and Regional Chairman G. Murali.
