9 convicted in Puthur police station attack case

The special court at Poonamallee on Thursday convicted nine persons in a case relating to a bomb attack by the now defunct Tamil Nadu Viduthalai Padai (Tamil Nadu Liberation Army) on Puthur Police Station in Cuddalore district in 1991.

Convicting them for the offences, special court judge V. Ramasamy said the court will pronounce the punishment portion on March 24.

According to the Crime Branch CID police, on April 6, 1991, a gang attacked the police with lethal weapons and opened fire at them indiscriminately. A police constable succumbed to multiple injuries while a Sub-Inspector and two head constables suffered grievous injuries. The gang escaped under cover of darkness.

The CB CID filed charges against the group comprising Elavarasan, Lenin, Amulraj, Venkatesan, Elangomani, Kumar, Nallarasan, Senguttuvan, Singaram and Velmurugan. As Lenin died in a bomb explosion and Elangomani turned approver, the police tried the case against nine persons.
