Biju Radhakrishnan and Saritha S. Nair, first and second accused in the solar scam, were sentenced to six years’ rigorous imprisonment on Thursday by Judicial First Class Magistrate (I) here R. Jayakrishnan .
Cases, registered at the Aranmula police station, in connection with the solar scam had attracted public attention because of allegations levelled against the office of the Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. It was alleged that Mr. Chandy’s office and persons close to him were closely linked to the scam.
This is the first verdict in 33 cases relating to the scam investigated by a special investigation team led by Additional Director General of Police A. Hemachandran. The verdict came in a cheating case pertaining to a complaint filed by Baburaj, a non-resident Keralite from Edayaranmula.
Mr. Baburaj alleged that the accused had cheated him of Rs. 1.19 crore promising to make him director of their Team Solar company.
He claimed that Saritha S. Nair had introduced herself as Lakshmi Nair and Biju Radhakrishnan as R.V. Nair.
The court also ordered Radhakrishnan and Saritha to pay a compensation of Rs. 75 lakh and Rs. 45 lakh respectively to Mr. Baburaj.
