55 hurt as bus overturns

As many as 55 persons, including 15 girl students, were injured when the bus in which they were travelling from Jayamkondam to Tiruchi overturned near Kayarlabad near here on Saturday morning.

Students and teachers of Periyar Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Jayamkondam were proceeding to Tiruchi to participate in the 133rd birth anniversary of the late Periyar at Periyar Maniammai educational institutions. As the bus was reaching Kayarlabad, the driver lost control of the vehicle which overturned instantly, police said. The injured were rushed to the Government Hospital here where they were treated for simple injuries. Eight teachers were referred to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital for follow-up treatment.

Durai Manivel and S.S. Sivakumar, MLAs, visited the injured at the hospital. The Kayarlabad police have registered a case.
