March 28, 2012 02:09 am | Updated 02:09 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court on Tuesday granted liberty to more than 500 HT consumers for approaching the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission seeking appropriate orders regarding the conditions imposed on high tension industries by TANGEDCO.

Justice K. Venkataraman directed the Commission to dispose of the applications within 30 days from the date of filing of the applications after following the due process of law. The petitioners had challenged the proceedings of the Chief Engineer (Commercial), TANGEDCO, in memo dated February 25 which culminated into another memo dated February 29 imposing power holiday.

After hearing both sides, Mr. Justice Venkataraman granted liberty to the petitioners for approaching the Commission. However, the interim order passed by the court earlier would continue on the condition that the consumers should not consume more power that what they purchased from third parties.

If they used more power than the power purchased, the department was at liberty to take action against such consumers.
