As many as 47, 869 units of sand and silt have been collected from seven reaches so far in the process of desilting the Srivaikuntam dam as per the directive from National Green Tribunal.
Stakeholders, who got tender, collected 25, 068 units of sand and 22, 801 units of silt in the dam, Collector M. Ravikumar said here on Monday.
The NGT on October 7 issued orders only to desilt in the first and second reach of the historic dam. Since the order was issued, 368 units of sand and 5,180 units of silt from the first reach and in the second reach, 9, 525 units of sand and 8,400 units of silt had been collected.
Tender was approved to collect a total of 3,05,700 cubic metre of sand and 7,13,300 cubic metre of silt from all seven reaches in the dam. The tender was obtained to collect sand at a cost of Rs.4,32,78,240 and silt at Rs. 5,52,00,940, he said.
Initially, the Public Works Department started desilting works in Srivaikuntam dam, the eighth anaicut located at the tail-end of Tamirabharani irrigation system in Tuticorin district on June 30.
