Three police officers in the Kalapet circle were suspended on Thursday for dereliction of duty after 12 persons were injured in a clash between members of two political parties.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Atul Katiyar told The Hindu that action was taken against Circle Inspector of Kalapet V. Balakrishnan, Station House Officer Velaiyan and Constable Ramesh as they failed to prevent a scuffle between members of the Congress and All Indian N.R Congress (AINRC) on Wednesday night.

The clash was the result of an alleged dispute over distribution of freebies in Kalapet constituency by the supporters of Public Works Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan.

Members of the AINRC allegedly attacked Congress workers with sticks and stones and injured 12 persons. Mr. Katiyar said that two of the 12 persons sustained head injuries.
