July 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - TUTICORIN:

As many as 250 cases were booked until evening hours on Wednesday in various parts of Tuticorin district against two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets.

Besides, 75 two-wheelers were seized since the drivers had not been in possession of necessary documents, according to Superintendent of Police, Ashwin M. Kotnis.

Fine of Rs.100 was also imposed on erring riders. However, the mandatory order by High Court for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets has witnessed a good result. Ninety per cent of the riders wore helmets.

The SP said district police had introduced cell phone numbers –‘9487008800’ in the public interest to receive any complaint against trader selling helmet at an excess price beyond maximum retail price.

Some bike riders claimed that helmets were not available in most of the shops here and they had been destined to pay fine. Of late, some helmets were of inferior quality and found to be unsafe.

The SP maintained that there would be no leniency in the enforcement since it was a directive from the court.

Phone numbers

Complaints of high pricing of helmets by traders could be lodged through cell phone numbers – 9566281428 (Inspector of Labour), 9445000370 (District Supply Officer) and also on 0461-2341471, said sources from Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection.
